The relationship between Johnny Allgood (Mia Wasikowska) and Laser Allgood (Josh Hutcherson) is difficult to explain. They are two siblings who was born from different mothers but from same father. They never knew who their father because they had been living with their mother.
Dr. Nicole Allgood (Annette Bening) and Jules Allgood (Julianne Moore) are intended to raise Joni and Laser together without their father. They are not ever know who the father of their children and it was never a problem for their mothers. All is well until Joni and Laser find out who their father without the knowledge of their mother.
When 18-year-old Joni would leave home for college and Laser 15-year-old suddenly asked Joni to find their father. Although the beginning not too enthusiastic, Joni still comply a request his sister and even they both finally successful find Paul Hatfield (Mark Ruffalo) who has donated sperm to two their mothers. In a short time, the kinship between the five of them got a little messy and must be defined again.
